Aicha Toure: Antonin Kratochvil

Image
The image below was taken by Antonin Kratochvil. This photographer is well known in the photography world for his images. A lot of them involve people in different scenarios. Looking at his work, I noticed that a lot of them were portraits. It always involved people. The image I chose below really caught my eye. I like how the image sort of looks like a silhouette. the main focus is the women but the different elements in the photo really makes it captivating. I really like the dark spots compared to the highlighted parts. The fabric in front of her gives the image another meaning. Looking at the picture it's as if the woman is happy and free. I say this because of her spreader arms, the little smile, and just the lighting of the image. I think Antonin Kratochvil did a good job on being able to capture such a happy moment. She seems filled with life and I hope to take images like this also.

Aicha Toure: Andre Kertesz

Image
- Andre Kertesz This image was taken by Andre Kertesz. He is a Hungarian photographer who has made a huge impact in the world of photography. Something that Kertesz is known for is his still life images. He produced many pictures of inanimate object and gave meaning to each of them. The image. above, is one of Kertesz work that I found so interesting. It is so simple yet so captivating in its own way. The fork is an object that people always use to eat. Even though the image focuses on the fork, I can't help but notice the plate. The plate to me seems empty and I think that it means the person is either getting ready to eat or has finished his meal. I appreciate the shadow of the fork and plate but also the negative space of the shadow that the plate produces. This image in its own way is really beautiful. When I start on my still life project, I will definitely be using Andre Kertesz as an inspiration for some of the images that I produce.

Aicha Toure: Sebastiào Salgado

Image
 - Sebastiào Salgado(2008) The image above was taken by  Sebastiào Salgado in Alaska. This scenery is so beautifully captivated that I was drawn to it immediately. the contrast in this image is also so fascinating and just makes the picture even more fascinating. Sebastiào Salgado is a Brazilian photographer who even took his talents to the big screens. A lot of his work is in black and white and is heavy in contrast, detail, and exposure. Specifically in the image above, I really appreciate the level of detail that is in the mountains and the clouds.  Think that's what gravitated towards me when I first saw the image. Sebastiao Salgado has many works that are similar to do this and his techniques are so beautiful to me. The image itself makes me feel like something special is coming towards me. I say that because of the bright light that's found the end of the stream and mountains. It makes me think of the saying, "there is light at the end of the tunnel." When I t

Aicha Toure: Herb Ritts

Image
Herb Ritts (1988) This is image was taken in 1988 by Herb Ritts. Out of the many works that I seen by this photographer, this is one of the pictures that I gravitated towards. The reason I chose this image was because of the level of detail that can be seen in the water droplets, the water itself, and his hair. In his image, I noticed that Herb Ritts seemed to focus on the subjects physique more than his face which leads me to believe that the subject might be a swimmer if I'm not mistaking. This picture is an example of environmental portrait because the subject if a person and surrounding him is water. I really appreciate the individual features of water droplets and how smooth the water looks. I'm not sure of the man is standing up and getting watered down or if he is doing some sort of swim move. I believe that this brings a different interpretation of the picture. I also like that the man seems to be halfway in the water yet all of him is wet. This image is very interest

Aicha Toure: Arnold Newman

Image
- Arnold Newman In 1942, this image was taken of a German painter and sculptor named Max Ernst. Like many of Arnold Newman's work, it is a portrait of someone in their work space or in an environment that defines who they are in a sense. In this image that was taken, I noticed the different art works that's hung up on the wall and the one sculpture that is sitting on a stand. To me this image shows who the subject is. He is a creative person and it also seems like during his time, he takes a break and sits in his chair that's like a throne and he smokes. The subject is a busy person who seems to dedicate his life to his work. I appreciate the different contrasts and elements of the picture. The different shadings and lightings brings a different level of detail to the image. The position in which the subject is sitting in shows that he is a serious and stern man and this can all be interpreted in the image. I also like the smoke that surrounds the man. He seems unbothe

Aicha Toure: Ralph Gibson

Image
-Ralph Gibson This image was taken by American photographer Ralph Gibson. Ralph Gibson is known for his images that have a lot of negative/positive space. The negative/positive space that's in the image allows you to focus straight at what it is that you can see. In this case, the focus is on the man who seems to have a spotlight on himself. This image caught my eyes because of the choices he made. The negative/positive space surrounding the man makes me give my attention all to him and I think that was the idea of the image. This image is an example of a silhouette, artificial light, framing, and negative/positive space. There is so many elements in the image that allows you to interpret it in different ways. I believe the man is in his own spotlight because his head is help up high. I also noticed that the circle object in the background is a lantern and that is why the man looks like a silhouette.  I really appreciate the artistic choices of the photographer

Aicha Toure: Lee Friedlander

Image
1996 NY, Lee Friedlander  In 1996, Lee Friedlander an American artist and photographer took this self portrait of himself driving through New York. Compared to other self portraits that I have seen, this picture to me looks kind of intense. maybe it is his body position, lighting, or facial expression but immediately I got an intense feeling from the image. I like that he chose to capture an image of himself from outside this car instead of inside. It shows me that he is performing some action and it brings in more detail to the image. I appreciate the artistic view of Lee Friedlander. Also I really like the contrast and the different shades of grey. The in between is what brings the image altogether and defines the meaning more. I appreciate his artistic choices and I hope to create images with inspiration to his art
