Aicha Toure- Photography Changes Everything by Marvin Heiferman

Many times, when thought about pictures and photos, we go straight to thinking about our phones. It is the first thing that we reach for. Back then, people for portrait paintings of themselves because photos and pictures hadn't really been a thing yet. The influence of photography on the culture, tradition, religion, the world, and everyday life can be seen through one click. In Marvin Heiferman's essay, "Photography Changes Everything", he speaks about the impact of photography. The history of photography is so fascinating and to see where we are now in the 21st century is pretty crazy.

Photography, being as simple as it sounds, is evolutionary when looking through history. Being able to tell a story through a picture based on angles, lightings, exposures, contrasts, and many more can make the interpretation of a photo different between each person. Personally I find photography something that everyone has access too but not enough people have knowledge of. To tell a story, even with one item in the image based on the fact that it is in black and white can tell the person reading the image so much.

Marvin Heiferman did a great job of emphasizing the power of photography. Today we have schools, museums, and art galleries dedicated to photography. Photography is an art that is used to express ones self. Being able to tell a story and to have meaning behind every detail without any words is something truly amazing. I want to be able to tell a story and not through words. I want people to be able to have different interpretations of the images that I capture. Using the history of photography and the influence it has over the world as Heiferman says, I know I can take meaningful photos and add to history long into the future.

Herb Ritts (1988) This is image was taken in 1988 by Herb Ritts. Out of the many works that I seen by this photographer, this is one of the pictures that I gravitated towards. The reason I chose this image was because of the level of detail that can be seen in the water droplets, the water itself, and his hair. In his image, I noticed that Herb Ritts seemed to focus on the subjects physique more than his face which leads me to believe that the subject might be a swimmer if I'm not mistaking. This picture is an example of environmental portrait because the subject if a person and surrounding him is water. I really appreciate the individual features of water droplets and how smooth the water looks. I'm not sure of the man is standing up and getting watered down or if he is doing some sort of swim move. I believe that this brings a different interpretation of the picture. I also like that the man seems to be halfway in the water yet all of him is wet. This image is very interest

Aicha Toure: Lee Friedlander

 1996 NY, Lee Friedlander  In 1996, Lee Friedlander an American artist and photographer took this self portrait of himself driving through New York. Compared to other self portraits that I have seen, this picture to me looks kind of intense. maybe it is his body position, lighting, or facial expression but immediately I got an intense feeling from the image. I like that he chose to capture an image of himself from outside this car instead of inside. It shows me that he is performing some action and it brings in more detail to the image. I appreciate the artistic view of Lee Friedlander. Also I really like the contrast and the different shades of grey. The in between is what brings the image altogether and defines the meaning more. I appreciate his artistic choices and I hope to create images with inspiration to his art

Aicha Toure: Ralph Gibson

-Ralph Gibson This image was taken by American photographer Ralph Gibson. Ralph Gibson is known for his images that have a lot of negative/positive space. The negative/positive space that's in the image allows you to focus straight at what it is that you can see. In this case, the focus is on the man who seems to have a spotlight on himself. This image caught my eyes because of the choices he made. The negative/positive space surrounding the man makes me give my attention all to him and I think that was the idea of the image. This image is an example of a silhouette, artificial light, framing, and negative/positive space. There is so many elements in the image that allows you to interpret it in different ways. I believe the man is in his own spotlight because his head is help up high. I also noticed that the circle object in the background is a lantern and that is why the man looks like a silhouette.  I really appreciate the artistic choices of the photographer
